About the Artist
Tansi, Hello! My name is JC, I’m a self-taught beader with an education in Fine Arts, Photography and Graphic Design. From Treaty 6, now living + practising in Tio’tia:ke “Montreal, QC”.
Growing up with a passion for art included a lack of Indigenous representation. With the skills developed and refined during my education, I hope to share Indigenous humour and themes through both decorative and wearable art.
In April 2021, Tansi Maskwa was established as an online platform to sell art and be able to give a portion back to the Indigenous community of Turtle Island.
Donations
Since 2021, over $1800 from your purchases has been donated to various individuals and organizations!
From 2021–2022, the amount and frequency of donations was never concrete and was often paid out-of-pocket. The not-so-fun part of running a business alone and having to teach yourself along the way!
In 2023, 1% of gross profits were donated to Indigenous individuals and organisations of Turtle Island.
Today, donations are only fundraiser-based—not per each purchase. Along the way of putting myself deeper into debt, I learned there is unfortunately nothing to be donated, unless accounted for into the prices of items, ie: fundraisers.
Over the years, it has become ever-increasingly difficult to fully support the cost of living on an independent artist “salary” while also keeping items affordable. Unfortunately due to the lack of sales during slower months ($0 or negative amounts in profits after bills for consecutive months) it has been impossible to set any money aside.
