Poppy Pin

Beaded Poppy Pin Kit

material

  • thread bobbin
  • 2 needles #10
  • felt foundation
  • beads (6/0 speckled yellow and black, 11/0 black, red, white)
  • cardboard
  • leather backing
  • butterfly pin
  • super glue

Knowledge of flat stitch is required. Instructions based on two-needle method.

1 needle threads the beads, 2nd needle tacks down.
The backstitch method often leads to undoing/recounting beads as the tension changes from tacking
down. For more intricate works, you also have more control over where the beads ultimately end up laying

Part 1: Two-Needle Flatstitch

6/0 beads - center

  1. Start with securing your first needle with thread
  2. begin with tacking down the 6/0 speckled yellow bead at the center of the X
  3. build the first full row by surrounding the yellow bead with the 6/0 black beads (7–9 beads), pass your needle through the first bead of the row and tack down. Come back up to stitch in between every other bead until each space is tacked down

11/0 beads - petals - introduce second needle

  • Row 2 Start one bead space before one of the lines on the marked X. String 1 black bead, 4–5 red beads, repeat x3 (1 black, 4–5 red, 1 black, 4–5 red, 1 black, 4–5 red) Ensuring you’re following the marked X to create the base of the 4 petals. Introduce the second needle by coming up to tack down every other bead. You may need to adjust the strung beads as your tension changes by tacking down. Instead of undoing stitching you can easily adjust as you go.
  • Row 3–4: continue building by increasing the number of red beads as necessary for 2 more rows (3 petal rows)
  • Row 5: for the 4th petal row continue following the marked X but now start with 1 white bead, 1 black, 8–10 red, 1 black, repeat x3
  • Row 6: start a bit further behind the marked X, pick up 2 white beads, 12-13 black beads, repeat x3
  • Row 7: complete the final row with only white beads. tie off and cut your threads. cut the excess felt

Part 2: Assembly

  1. trace the pin over the cardboard
  2. make the circle slightly smaller by bringing the diameter in by ½ cm or 2 about beads width. set aside.
  3. pierce the pin through the center of the leather. set aside.
  4. apply glue to the back of the pin, align and apply cardboard to center
  5. apply glue to cardboard, align and apply pinned leather to center
  6. wait for glue to dry 1–2hrs or next day (weigh down the leather with anything with slight mass, eg. an open pair of scissors, 2 small books, a stapler and tape dispenser, two mugs. tight clamps or extreme weight is unnecessary and will damage the beads.
  7. cut excess leather once the it has adequately adhered to the felt (glue has solidified and won’t easily peel off)
  8. sew along the edge of the pin by starting from between the felt and leather only going through the leather. continue stitching through the felt and leather all the way around. finish securing the leather to the beaded felt by tying it offj and cutting/singeing the excess thread

let pin glue set at least 48hrs before wearing

Wear your creation starting the last Friday of October to November 11th
